All Tarzan books and movies published before 1928 are now public domain. And yes, that does mean you can adapt the character into your own works.

Because the rights holders for the original Tarzan are incredibly protective of their copyright, and refused to sell Disney and Square Enix the rights to use the character outside of the first game.
